Jira epic not showing on the board? Why and fixes

You know the epic exists, its stories are on the board, but the epic itself is nowhere to be seen. This can be by design: Jira can show epics in other places than ordinary tickets. Here is where to look.

A team member pins an epic as a swimlane header on a board of story cards.

The short answer

An epic is a container for other work, not a piece of work you move across columns, so a board may not show it as a card. Depending on the settings, an epic appears in one of three places instead: the epic panel on the backlog, as a swimlane heading on the board, or as a card only when those are switched off.

If you want to see an epic's work, open the epic itself, or turn on the epic panel or epic swimlanes. If the epic is missing from those too, one of the checks below explains why.

The epic panel

On the backlog, Atlassian's view settings include an Epic panel: turn it on to open the panel, and turn it off to close it. The keyboard shortcut is E. The panel lists the epics and lets you filter the backlog to one epic's work.

Swimlanes by epic

On a company-managed board, a space or board admin can set swimlanes to Epics. Atlassian's swimlane help says each swimlane is then one parent work item, an epic by default, and work items that do not belong to one are grouped below. The epic is the swimlane's title rather than a card. The setting is under More actions (•••) > Board settings > Layout > Swimlanes. More on this in Jira swimlanes explained.

Open the epic

The simplest way to see everything in an epic is to open it. Its child work items are listed inside. You can also search for them with the parent field, for example parent = PAY-120, as explained in what an epic is in Jira.

Why an epic is missing from the panel or swimlanes

No child work on the board yet (team-managed boards)

Atlassian's Cloud troubleshooting says that on a team-managed board, an epic appears in the board's epic panel only if at least one of its child work items is already on the board. If all its stories are still in the backlog, the epic stays hidden from the board view. Fix: move one of its child work items onto the board, or look for the epic in the backlog.

The parent is outside the board's filter

With swimlanes by epic, Atlassian's swimlane help says parent work items outside the board's current filter are hidden. An epic that lives in another space, or lacks the label or component the board filters on, does not get a swimlane even though its stories are on the board. Fix: ask the board admin to check the board's filter.

Its children are in an unmapped status or not on the board

If none of the epic's children are on the board, there is nothing to put in its swimlane. Atlassian's column help says unmapped statuses hide work items from both the board and the backlog, so children in an unmapped status count as not there. See ticket not showing on the board for that check.

The epic panel is turned off

Check the backlog's view settings. If the Epic panel toggle is off, no epics are listed.

On kanban boards

Kanban boards add one more twist. Atlassian's Data Center help explains that when the kanban backlog is enabled, a setting called Epics Panel appears in the board's columns configuration. When it is on, epics show as a panel on the kanban backlog page; when it is off, they can show on the board as cards or swimlane titles depending on the swimlane setting. If your kanban board shows epics as cards and you do not want that, or the other way round, this is the setting to ask about.

If you really want epics as cards

Some teams want the epic on the board as a card so they can move it to Done when its work is finished. That depends on the board's filter including epics and on the swimlane and panel settings above. It needs a board admin, so ask first whether the team wants it: a board full of epic cards next to their own stories can be harder to read.

Menu names in Jira Cloud change from time to time. If a setting named here is not where the steps say, search Atlassian's help for its name.

Practise working with epics

Seeing how stories and epics connect is easier once you have done it. Agile Board Practice has a lesson where you create a story and set its epic, and one where you read a ticket's epic field to find which bigger goal it belongs to, both with feedback on each step.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't epics show on my Jira board?

Boards can show epics in the epic panel or as swimlane titles instead of as cards. If the epic is missing from those too, its child work may not be on the board yet, or the epic is outside the board's filter.

How do I show the epic panel in Jira?

On the backlog, turn on Epic panel in the view settings, or press E. The panel lists epics and lets you filter the backlog by epic.

Why is an epic missing from the epic panel on a team-managed board?

Atlassian's help says an epic appears in the board's epic panel only if at least one of its child work items is already on the board. Move a child work item onto the board to show it.

How do I group the board by epic?

A space or board admin can set swimlanes to Epics under More actions, Board settings, Layout, Swimlanes. Each epic then becomes a row on the board.

How can I see all tickets in an epic?

Open the epic to see its child work items, or search with parent = followed by the epic's key.
